The "Pacific Northwest", which included British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon, was home to some of the largest Douglas Fir, cedar, hemlock, and other species of softwood in the world. What was originally an encumbrance to the settlers arriving from Europe wanting to farm the areas soon became one of their most valuable commodities. In some cases, trees were actually burned in order to prepare the land for farming, but once farming was established, logging and lumber mills began to appear.
The Arrow Creek sawmill, one of many small steam powered sawmills, used a converted "donkey" engine from a logging camp. The mill was later converted to electricity.

This project can be constructed in a variety of scales using balsa, styrene, and easily obtainable materials such as dowels and tubing. Plan includes six structures: two storage tanks, two distillation towers, furnace, and heat exchanger. The N scale version shown uses styrene railings, ladder, and stairs.
Due to the complexity and numerous possible configurations of refinery layouts, piping schematics are not included, and will be up to the individual modeler to determine. Painted electrical wiring can be used.
* Note: This plan is for scratch building six various refinery structures and includes scaled plans and traceable templates - there are no cardstock or MB versions with this plan.
This is a bit of a whimsical project, as I discovered an interesting paper crimping tool while wandering through a craft store. WHile the scale of crimping tool is more suitable for O scale, I decided to try it as an HO scale example. The actual framework is a Post & Beam structure made using stripwood and 1/16" x 1/16" balsa. The building could easily be finished with stripwood planking but I thought I would give the crimping tool a try.
Please keep in mind that this was an experiment in simplicity and not typical of our more comprehensive scale plan/cardstock combination packages. For a Free example of a typical ScaleModelPlans.com plan package try our Plan 576 on our New/Specials page.

Since long before the Industrial Revolution coal has been a primary source of energy for both homes and industry, and continues to play an important role in the economy of many regions.
The Kaymoor Mine and processing plant in West Virginia employed more than 800 workers in the early 1900’s, with operations coming to an end in the early 1960’s. The small local town site once served by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad ultimately became one of many coal mile ghost towns.
The complete package includes plans of four main structures, connecting passages, chutes, and loading booms as shown. This set comes in a compressed file package. You will need WinZip or similar free program to unzip.
* Note: The cardstock version (shown) will require some balsa pieces

Feed mills such as this one started showing up in North America in the late 1800’s, where farmers could bring in some of their grain crops and go home with processed feeds for their livestock.

"Low relief" backdrops provide a quick and cost effective way to enhance your model train layout. They also help to create a nice transition between our other three dimensional structures and the final backdrop or back wall of the train room. You can print out multiple copies, or combine them with Plan 2060 - "Low-relief" Industrial Buildings to quickly populate a commercial or industrial section of your model railroad plan.
This package contains color cardstock printouts only, (Office Building, Federal Building, Textile Mill,General Store). There are no scaled plans or traceable templates with this package. All scales print to standard letter size paper. Some assembly will be required.
Low relief structures can create a high density look with a relatively small building footprint. Common placement of low-relief structures is at the rear of a layout, usually adjacent the backdrop. This set of four industrial low relief structures can be done separately as individual buildings, or in a row to create an industrial block. With a bit of manipulation, the patterns could be mirrored and modified to create complete structures. (*includes 'photo-texture' cardstock sheets)
Image shown is the included cardstock version done in N scale.
* Package includes scaled plans and traceable templates as well as color cardstock printouts.

Why do model builders choose to scratch build instead of buying pre-made structures? There are a variety of reasons, one of which is economics. Pre-made model railroad buildings are quick and easy to install on your model railroad layout, but the cost is a definite factor for those on a fixed or limited income. In many cases, the amount of physical material that goes into a model building is minimal. Using scale plans is a cheap alternative. Another reason is the sense of satisfaction in creating something on your own. Model building kits still require “fine-tuning”, such as removing sprues and burrs, sanding and trimming, etc. With a little extra effort, and some raw materials, you can create structures that look as good, and in some cases, more realistic than a plastic or laser cut model. If you are into “kit-bashing”, you can do the same by mixing and matching panels from various scale model plan packages to create a totally unique model railroad building.
